Will the UK government or the IPT officially confirm a Technical Capability Notice was issued to Apple by June 30, 2027?

$17,269 Vol. 234d 5h left
Description The Home Office reportedly served Apple a secret Technical Capability Notice (TCN) under s.253 Investigatory Powers Act 2016 to access encrypted iCloud data; Apple pulled Advanced Data Protection in the UK in Feb 2025 and filed a new Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT) claim in 2026 over a reported replacement notice. The Home Office keeps a 'neither confirm nor deny' (NCND) stance; the IPT reserved its NCND ruling after a Sept 17, 2026 hearing.
  • This event resolves YES if, between Nov 8, 2026 and June 30, 2027 23:59 Europe/London (22:59 UTC), the UK government or the IPT publicly and officially confirms a TCN (original, renewed or replacement) was issued to Apple.
  • This event resolves NO otherwise.
  • 1. Specificity: YES requires (a) an on-record public statement by a UK minister, the Home Office, or government counsel (open hearing, public filing, Hansard, GOV.UK) confirming such a TCN, including saying a TCN to Apple was withdrawn, varied, replaced, renewed or revoked; or (b) a published open IPT or appellate judgment stating such a TCN was issued to Apple, or ordering that the government may no longer maintain NCND specifically about whether a TCN was issued to Apple. Apple must be explicitly identified as recipient.
  • 2. Exclusion: Leaks, anonymous sources, US officials, Apple's statements alone, closed material, procedural rulings, 'assumed facts' judgments not confirming existence, and IPCO or ISC reports do not count. Pre-Nov 8, 2026 statements do not count.
  • 3. Source Hierarchy: IPT judgments, GOV.UK and Hansard priority. Reuters, BBC, Computer Weekly, Law Gazette secondary; Privacy International/Liberty tertiary - counting only when reporting an official confirmation or judgment.
  • 4. Timing: Post-deadline resolves NO.
  • 5. Cancellation Rule: An IPT order lifting NCND counts on publication even if later appealed or stayed.
