Will an EU authority fine a smartphone or tablet maker under EU ecodesign or right-to-repair rules by Dec 31, 2027?
$31,620 Vol. 418d 6h left
Description Since June 20, 2025, smartphones/tablets sold in the EU must meet ecodesign rules (Reg. (EU) 2023/1670) and carry an energy label with a repairability class (Reg. (EU) 2023/1669). Member states had to transpose the Right to Repair Directive (EU) 2024/1799 by July 31, 2026. A Sept 2026 Right to Repair Europe review found ~82% of 2,334 smartphone models lacked required repair info.
- This event resolves YES if, between Nov 8, 2026 and Dec 31, 2027 23:59 UTC, the European Commission or an EU member-state authority publicly announces a formally imposed monetary fine or administrative financial penalty against a named smartphone/tablet brand owner (or its EU importer/authorised representative) for breaching Reg. 2023/1670, Reg. 2023/1669 (incl. labelling/EPREL duties under Reg. 2017/1369 for these products), successor provisions, or national law transposing Directive 2024/1799.
- This event resolves NO if no such penalty is announced by the deadline.
- 1. Specificity: Penalties under national penalty laws for breaching the above rules count. A fine citing several legal bases counts if one cited breach is under the covered rules. Unpaid or appealed fines count once formally imposed; later annulment does not change YES.
- 2. Exclusion: Warnings, compliance orders or withdrawals without a monetary penalty; penalties only against retailers/marketplaces; unnamed companies; proposed fines; fines solely under unrelated national obsolescence/consumer laws (e.g., France's 2020 iPhone-throttling fine) or France's repairability/durability index; penalties announced before Nov 8, 2026.
- 3. Source Hierarchy: Official publications of the imposing authority (press releases, penalty registers, market-surveillance reports, legal decisions) priority. Reuters, Bloomberg, AFP secondary. Euractiv, Politico Europe, The Register, major national outlets tertiary.
- 4. Timing: First public announcement must be published before the deadline. Post-deadline resolves NO.
- 5. Cancellation Rule: Not applicable.
