• 1. Specificity: Eligible films are 2026 theatrical releases whose opening weekend ends on or before Dec 20, 2026. The compared figure is the opening-weekend gross Box Office Mojo lists for each film, including all previews/early fan or premium-format screenings that BOM rolls into the weekend. Monday actuals are final; Sunday studio estimates are used only if no actuals are published by the deadline. Any revision to a figure published before the deadline is used.
  
• 2. Exclusion: Films opening Dec 23-31 (e.g., Dec 25) are excluded. Worldwide/international grosses, 4/5-day holiday totals and re-releases do not count. If Avengers: Doomsday or Dune: Part Three is delayed outside the eligible window, it is treated as not released and the result is decided among eligible films.
  
• 3. Source Hierarchy: Box Office Mojo priority. The Numbers secondary. Deadline/Variety/The Hollywood Reporter tertiary.
  
• 4. Timing: Based on data available by December 23, 2026 23:59 UTC. Later revisions do not change the result.
  
• 5. Tie: If figures are equal to the dollar, the earlier-released film wins.
